ON THE ISSUES
Greater Funding for Our Schools
As our children become older and enter an increasingly globalized economy, employers will demand students be better prepared and to have the necessary skills to thrive in a competitive job market. Which is why I supported SB 1947 a bill that increases education funding for our local schools . I also voted yes on a new budger for Illinois, and I promise to always fight for future generations and their right for a ggod education.
Improving Women’s Health
Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths amount Illinois women, and early detection is essential to saving women’s lives everywhere, not just in Illinois. We need to empower and inform our women about breast cancer, which is why I have supported legislation to improve mammogram standards, better inform women on the need for regular screenings, and require insurance policies to cover MRIs for breast screenings when medically necessary.
Equal Pay for Women
Even in the 21st century, according to the National Women’s Law Center, women who work full-time, year-round in the United States of America are only paid 80 cents for every dollar paid to their male counterparts. I have always supported equal pay throughout the workplace which is why in the past, I have supported legislation that expands the Equal Pay Act to all employers and increases the penalty for companies violating the law.
Creating Jobs through Clean Energy
Working with business, labor, and environmental groups I have supported the Illinois Clean Jobs Coalition’s Initiative, which is a plan calling for improved energy standards and jobs creation throughout Illinois. This expands the use of renewable energy and increases energy efficiency, which will help improve our environment while creating new, green jobs. The Illinois Clean Jobs Coalition initiative has already created tens of thousands of clean jobs throughout Illinois and I hope it continues to create thousands of more.
Empowering Older Adults
Sadly, elderly residents are often made targets of con artists and scams. Which is why I believe that education and empowering elderly residents is key. One way I have done this is by supporting legislation allowing senior citizen victims of financial exploitation to seek damages in court from their attackers. I also in the past have supported a measure making it a crime for someone with financial responsibility for a nursing home resident to fail to pay for the care received at the home.
Puerto Rican Statehood
I’m a strong supporter of Puerto Rico obtaining statehood, because I believe Puerto Rico deserves the same benefits other state receives, it is time to end the colonization. That is why I sponsored HR 164, which encourages the United States Congress to introduce and pass new legislation to allow Puerto Rico to vote on becoming the 51st state. This is an issue that is of extreme importance for the people of Puerto Rico.
Fighting for Justice for Victims
In 2015, when I first discovered that some survivors of sexual assault would never see their attackers brought to justice because of a legal loophole, I began working tirelessly on a bill to give police and prosecutors more time to put dangerous rapists behind bars. I did so by beginning to work on passing legislature ensuring that the time period to file criminal charges in sexual assault cases does not begin until all evidence has been analyzed, hopefully giving justice the best shot at prevailing, and this bill was passed January 1, 2016.
